"jamaicaobserver.com – Family, friends and fans of the late Reggae star Gregory Isaacs, popularly known as the Cool Ruler, gathered at the All Saints Anglican Church in Harrow Weald , London on Wednesday to bid farewell to the crroner who died on October 25.

The Jamaican Government was represented by High Commissioner to the UK, Anthony Johnson, while a number of Isaacs’s contemporaries packed the North London church for the service.

The singer’s remains were expected to arrive in Jamaican yesterday. Isaacs is to be accorded a state funeral next Saturday, November 20 at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston starting at 10:00 am

Viewing of Isaacs’ body will take place at the same venue on Friday, November 19 between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.The theme for the Thanksgiving Service is Red Rose for Gregory and persons attending being asked to take along a red rose and to wear black or white or a combination and to be seated by 9:30 am.

A tribute concert is also being organised for Thursday, November 18 at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre."

The Gregory Isaacs All Star band played all the popular rhythms over which Gregory Isaacs delivered numerous number one songs over a 40-year career.
The Cool Ruler looked restful, lean from having shed much weight during his final battles with cancer, as he lay draped in silk, dressed in a white suit with glistening studs and a beautifully engraved bible placed in his hands. The artistically carved dark oak coffin was draped in a red, gold and green flag bearing the image of the Lion of Judah. A single wreath made of white roses sat atop, beside his trademark white fedora.
Jamaican High Commissioner to the United Kingdom gave a tribute on behalf of Prime Minister Hon. Bruce Golding, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, all the members of the Jamaican parliament and the Jamaican community in the UK.
He said Gregory Isaacs' life and work showed Jamaica's true potential in his rise from very humble beginnings to become a global superstar. "
Long-time friend and band leader Clifton 'Bigga' Morrison recounted his years with Isaacs in a tribute that was anecdotally engaging and informative. He gave a moving account of Isaacs' last days as he visited with him at his bedside. The audience joined him in a frequent chant "We love you Gregory".
Reggae journalist Mandingo gave a detailed account of Gregory Isaacs' life from the early days at 'Idlers' Rest' in downtown Kingston. He detailed Isaacs' contribution to the growth of reggae music and placed into context the impact he had on the development of modern reggae.
Veteran reggae singer King Sounds paid tribute in song with a rendition of You're My Pilot.
Among the members of the entertainment industry in attendance were J.C. Lodge, Winston Francis, Sylvia Tella, Janet Kay, Niney the Observer, Audrey Reid and Carl Bradshaw.
Following the ceremony, Gregory Isaacs' remains were taken to a rest home at Gatwick Airport from where he will be flown to Jamaica today for an official funeral on November 20. Gregory Isaacs died in London on October 25. He was 60 years old."

legend Gregory Isaacs once again took superstar billing as hundreds of well-wishers, rather than mourners, celebrated his life in unique style in London yesterday.
A sunny, crisp autumn day set the stage for the Cool Ruler's final appearance in the city he regarded as his second home.
The All Saints Anglican Church in Harrow Weald, North London, was packed to the rafters as passionate, reflective tributes flowed from those who knew and loved the singer.
The Gregory Isaacs All Star band played all the popular rhythms over which Isaacs delivered numerous hit songs over a 40-year career.
The Cool Ruler looked restful as he lay draped in silk, dressed in a white suit with glistening studs and a beautifully engraved Bible placed in his hands. The artistically carved dark oak coffin was draped in a red, gold and green flag bearing the image of the Lion of Judah. A single wreath made of white roses sat atop, beside his trademark white fedora.
Tributes flowed, despite not following a specific order. Family members and friends painted Isaacs as a spirited comedian, friend, father and musical genius.
Anthony Johnson, the Jamaican high commissioner to the United Kingdom, gave a tribute on behalf of Prime Minister Bruce Golding; Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Olivia Grange; all the members of the Jamaican Parliament and the Jamaican community in the UK.

Johnson said Isaacs' life and work showed Jamaica's true potential in his rise from very humble beginnings to become a global superstar.

Morrison gave a moving account of Isaacs' last days as he visited the cancer-stricken entertainer at his bedside. The audience joined him in a frequent chant, "We love you, Gregory".
But perhaps the biggest tribute of all came in the spontaneous chaos that erupted when the band began playing Gregory's music. Much of the audience converged at the front of the church and sang his lyrics word for word. Vicar James Mercer appeared stunned but quickly acquiesced, as Isaacs' fans were determined to dispatch with protocol and celebrate his life in a style reminiscent of his many encore performances across the world.
Among the members of the entertainment industry in attendance were J.C. Lodge, Winston Francis, Sylvia Tella, Janet Kay, Niney the Observer, Audrey Reid and Carl Bradshaw.

Mit der Deutschlandpremiere des Spielfilms »Un homme quie crie« (Tschad/F/Belgien 2010, Foto) wird heute in Berlin das 3. Filmfestival »Afrikamera« eröffnet. Der Film erzählt, wie eine Familie im Tschad an den Verhältnissen zerbricht. Nein, nicht schon wieder eine Opfer-Geschichte aus Afrika!? »Un homme quie crie« ist anders. Es geht um Adam, der als Bademeister in einem Luxushotel in die Jahre gekommen ist. Chinesische Investoren übernehmen das Haus. Der Bademeister wird zum Parkplatzwächter degradiert, muß fortan eigenhändig Schranken für drängelnde, hupende Autofahrer heben. Die Hölle auf Erden, zumal in einem Land, das kurz vor einem Bürgerkrieg steht. Hotelbademeister wird Adams Sohn Abdel. Die beiden überwerfen sich. Als Abdel zwangsrekrutiert wird, versucht Adam nicht einmal, ihn freizukaufen. Falls er auf seinen alten Job spekuliert, geht die Rechnung auf. Gegenüber Abdels schwangerer Freundin gibt sich der Alte betrübt. Es kommt, wie es kommen muß, und Abdel wird von seinem Vater beerdigt. Die Leiche treibt einen Fluß hinunter. Ein Happy-end fällt aus. Der Film des Regisseurs Mahamat-Saleh Haroun bleibt ruhig; gedämpft untermalt das Plätschern der Wellen im Swimmingpool alltäglichen Wahnsinn. »Un homme quie crie« ist ein gutes Beispiel dafür, daß Afrikas »postindependence generation« sich vom »Kino der Parolen« verabschiedet hat, ohne das Kind mit dem Bad auszuschütten und belanglos zu werden. Beim »Afrikamera«-Festival (man spricht das e wie in Kamera) sind bis Sonntag acht weitere Filme zu sehen, darunter eine Satire über den kongolesischen Diktator Mobutu, eine Dokumentation über den Rastafari-Mythos Haile Selassie (letzter äthiopischer Kaiser) und eine über die erste frei gewählte Staatschefin des Kontinents, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (Liberia).

Lange Zeit und mit viel Aufwand war nach dem im letzten Februar in Südafrika verschwundenen Deutschen Uwe Gemballa vor Ort gesucht worden.  Die Story des Luxusautohändlers mit den angeblich dubiosen Kontakten zur kriminellen und zur Money-Szene ging weltweit viel-tausendfach durch alle Medien:

Viele Leute, die eigentlich gar nichts mit dem Kriminalfall zu tun hatten und die auch nichts Fundamentales zu dessen Aufklärung beizufügen hatten, nutzen das grelle Medien-Scheinwerferlicht um die schillernde Person Gemballa dazu, um sich selbst in Szene zu setzen, während in Südafrika weiter erfolglos nach dem Vermissten gesucht wurde. 

Als Gemballas Leiche dann endlich Ende September gefunden wurde - zwar sorgsam in Folie eingewickelt, doch ganz ohne offensichtliche, äußeren Verletzungen -, war auch das den Journalisten und Klatschtanten  natürlich sofort wieder zahllose internationale Top-Stories wert:

Um so erstaunlicher ist nun das plötzliche Ende der immer wieder gern erzählten Geschichte: die kurze Meldung nämlich, die heute fast unbeachtet durch einige, wenige Zeitungen ging. 
Der angebliche Mörder des Autohändlers sei am vergangenen Freitag in Südafrika festgenommen worden. Noch am selben Tag wurde dem "Täter" nicht nur der Prozess gemacht, er wurde auch sofort - im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes - in einem sehr "kurzen Prozess" für schuldig befunden und zu einer 20-jährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt. 

Allgemein verständlich ist ja durchaus, dass die Verantwortlichen diesen unangenehmen Fall um einen viel-devisenbringenden und gemeuchelten Europäer endlich - und möglichst schnell -  wieder aus den Tagesthemen der Weltpresse heraus haben wollen. Doch stellt sich hier unübersehbar die Frage, wer warum hinter dieser Eil-Verurteilung wirklich steckt und wem sie nützt. Und nachdem man die Aussagen einiger kompetenter Südafrikaner, die sich im juristischen System des Landes am Kap bestens auskennen, gehört hat, muss man wohl ernsthaft daran zweifeln, dass der 28-jährige Südafrikaner Thabiso Mpshe tätsächlich der langgesuchte Mörder von Uwe Gemballa ist:

"...Der 28-jährige Thabiso Mpshe aus Pretoria wurde nach Polizeiangaben am Freitag vom Obersten Gericht in Johannesburg für schuldig befunden. Er sei zu einer 20-jährigen Gefängnisstrafe verurteilt worden. Mpshe war demnach erst am Morgen des Freitags festgenommen worden.

Der Leichnam des 54-jährigen Gemballa war Ende September in Atterdigeville nahe Pretoria in einem Plastiksack gefunden worden, nachdem er seit Anfang Februar als verschollen galt. Der 54-Jährige war kurz nach seiner Ankunft aus Dubai am 8. Februar in Johannesburg verschwunden. Am Tag darauf hatte er nach Angaben der deutschen Polizei seiner Ehefrau telefonisch von einem Unfall berichtet und erzählt, dass er einen hohen Geldbetrag benötige. Er hatte das Telefonat zur Überraschung seiner Frau auf Englisch geführt. Danach verlor sich seine Spur."

"...The Sunday Times can today reveal exclusively that 28-year-old Thabiso Mpshe of Pretoria was arrested quietly on Friday and appeared in the high court in Johannesburg that afternoon.
As revealed previously in the Sunday Times, the businessman's body was found buried in Atteridgeville just over a month ago, on September 28. 
Police spokesman Colonel Vishnu Naidoo said yesterday: "It is still unclear how Gemballa was murdered, but indications are that he was suffocated. He had no visible injuries."
Naidoo said he was "not at liberty to say" if Mpshe pleaded guilty or whether the prosecution struck a deal with him.
When asked why the arrest in such a high-profile murder case was kept so low key, Naidoo said: "We need to protect any investigation, and it would not be to our benefit to talk about some successes for fear of jeopardising investigations.
"We are happy and satisfied that an arrest was made."
Top criminal attorney William Booth said the hastiness of the conviction and sentence sounded most "unusual".
Booth, chairman of the Criminal Law Committees of the Cape Law Society and the Law Society of South Africa, while not able to comment on this case, said: "It does seem that the police have struck some kind of deal to perhaps take statements and use it later to get to the big fish."
Gemballa, who was in serious financial trouble with the German authorities, evidently came to South Africa on a business trip to set up a local franchise of his company, Gemballa Automobiletechni, which specialises in tuning Porsches and Ferraris for the rich and famous.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga said it was not unusual for a criminal case to be disposed of within a day.
"If the person has an attorney (and) witnesses, prosecutors and all the other roleplayers are available, including a judge, the matter can be dealt with within a day.
"This was demonstrated with the World Cup special courts that were set up."
Mhaga said it was commendable that cases could be dealt with so speedily. "If someone is caught red-handed for shoplifting, and if he pleads guilty, and if he has an attorney available, then the case can be finalised in an hour."
But this is also entirely dependent on whether the court roll can accommodate an additional case on the day or not..."

South Africa, a country with a one of the world's highest murder rates of about 46 a day, has a poor track record in solving such crimes quickly..."

Mörder von Porscher-Tuner Gemballa verurteilt   

Vielleicht sollte jetzt die internationale Presse, die mit sovielen Artikeln und Beiträgen über den vermissten Deutschen, sein Umfeld und sein Schicksal gutes Geld verdient hat, mal laut und öffentlich nachfragen, was denn nun eigentlich tatsächlich hinter dem schnell abgehandelten Kriminalfall und dem Schicksal des Thabiso Mpshe steckt.


Und: Nein, wir haben dabei nicht vergessen, dass in Südafrika täglich um die 50 Morde auf der Tagesordnung stehen - und dass in den allermeisten Fällen Schwarze sowohl die Opfer als auch die Täter sind. Erklärungen dafür lassen sich viele finden - in der Geschichte des Landes und seiner momentanen Entwicklung. 

Und: Ja, dagegen muss sehr viel getan werden, auch von Seiten einer klaren und unerschrockenen Berichterstattung der internationalen Medien. 

Doch: In diesem, besondern Fall ist die schnell-angebotene Lösung geradezu absurd  - und ein junger, möglicherweise ja unschuldiger Mann wird dafür bitter bezahlen müssen.
